Born in England, William, the designer behind Metal Couture, grew up in New Zealand with his artist mother and engineer father. “I remember reading through the books fascinated by the dragons and armours in the crests, and as a result, my maker’s mark is inspired by the Griffiths family crest.” William’s teens saw him spread his wings, travelling to London with aspirations to see the Sex Pistols. He managed to get a job in Hatton Garden, his experience with a lathe compensating for his lack of qualifications. When he was thirty, William was involved in a serious car accident. Six months in hospital gave him ample time for introspection, cultivating his gothic side and a preoccupation with the Latin term “Memento Mori”- “Remember you are mortal”.
