The Best Dressed at the 73rd Tony Awards

Posted on

On the 10th June, the 73rd Tony Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall, New York City. The Tony’s celebrate the success, performances and brilliance of Broadway, from choreography, to musicals, to plays. The red carpet was full of stunning ensembles from talented actors and directors. The red carpet had the LGBT rainbow flag as a backdrop, making the evening even more bright and colourful.

Presenter and actor, James Corden hosted the Tony Awards. His second time as host was just as fun as the last, with a 10 minute musical number and light-hearted, funny skits. He also wore a variety of coloured suits, from the red carpet, to the musical number, to the presenting. The big winners of the night was Hadestown, a Greek play that took home 8 Tony awards. The night marked a very special moment, with Ali Stoker winning an award for her performance in Oklahoma and becoming the first person in a wheelchair to ever win a Tony.

The fashion of the evening was extremely colourful and showstopping. There were more bright and patterned suits than previous award shows, as well as more bright block colours. Dresses were mainly one shoulder, flowy and lots of tulle was seen on the red carpet. It was great to see more male guests wearing bright colours and fun designs. Theatre owner and producer, Jordan Roth wore a floor length, red sequin cape and matching red suit and Taylor Mac went all out with a bold headpiece and makeup, metallic shawl and colourful strips of fabric. Jewellery was used to highlight the gowns and suits, with diamond accessories proving very popular.

Take a look at our top 5 best dressed at the 73rd Tony Awards 2019.

Billy Porter has easily been one of the best dressed celebrities at every award show this year. He never fails to disappoint with his fashion choices and his Tony award outfit was as vibrant as it was political. Billy wore a red and pink half dress half suit tulle outfit, designed by Celestino Couture. It was inspired by Elizabethan couture and featured over 30,000 Swarovski crystals, a not-so-subtle nod to his 2013 Tony award-winning performance in Kinky Boots. The red suit was decorated with flowers around his legs, with pink tulle flowing into a train. Billy said that the outfit was meant to represent the female reproductive organs and should be seen as a pro-choice statement about women’s abortion rights, following the Alabama ruling. Billy made a powerful statement with his outfit and accessorised with sparkly brooches around his collar, on his suit lapels and Oscar Heyman rings.

Broadway star, Audra McDonald kept her look simple, with a white one shoulder gown, from Halston. As her dressed draped over her chest and up one shoulder, she filled all the available space that she could with diamond accessories from James Martin. She wore a diamond dragonfly brooch at the top of her one shoulder, two chunky cuff bracelets on either wrist and an oversized ring. She wore a pair of diamond double hoop earrings that she comedically ‘tore off’ during a skit with James Corden and actress Laura Linney.

Actress Lucy Liu looked stunning in a purple princess gown, designed by Christian Siriano. The gown was primarily made of tulle and had playful cut outs around the bodice. The rich purple colour looked beautiful on her and on the red carpet. She paired her gown with a green-turquoise clutch bag and drop earrings, for an extra pop of colour and brightness. Her earrings were from Lorraine Schwartz and perfectly completed her look.

Actress and playwright, Danai Gurira wore a gorgeous gown from Gucci to the awards and wowed the red carpet. The white and gold floral printed dress was Renaissance-inspired, with a high collar, long flared sleeves and statement buttons. The satin bow detail at the back flowed down to an elegant train. She paired the gown with understated jewellery, with pearl stud earrings and turquoise and diamond statement rings. Her gown was timeless and the extra jewellery accents completed her sophisticated look.

Regina King looked pretty-in-pink and pretty-in-Prada with her simple pink silk gown. The dress hugged her figure beautifully and was high neck with simple straps. The neckline of the gown emphasised her long arms, that Regina complimented with two diamond bracelets on each wrist, from Jacob & Co. She wore her hair back and completed her look with a pair of dazzling chandelier earrings and a pink lip.
