Founder and lead designer of award-winning eponymous brand, Daniela Komatović started her company in 2015. Daniela is based in Prague and studied graphic design, before realising her passion for jewellery design. Along with her popular and successful jewellery brand, Daniela is also a painter, graphic designer and photographer.

In 2017, Daniela won the Gold Award in the ‘Jewelry, Glasses and Watches’ category at the prestigious and internationally renowned A’Design Awards and Competition in Milan. Daniela Komatović specialises in luxury gold jewellery and uses precious gemstones and black rhodium to add extra sparkle and glamour to her pieces. We chat to Daniela about how she makes her jewellery, her award-winning Eye To The Soul collection and the designers she admires.

How did your brand begin?

I decided to start designing jewellery after my husband, a professional gemologist, introduced me to the magical world of precious stones and pearls. I designed pieces for myself and friends before I started my own signature line of luxury jewellery in January 2015.

When did you first fall in love with jewellery and knew you wanted to become a designer?

I knew I wanted to do art & design since I was a child. Painting & drawing were my passion and I was already interested in fashion and jewellery design. In children's art school, I learned all kinds of techniques and I use that experience to this day.

Is there anyone in particular who has heavily influenced/guided you as a designer?

I discovered my passion for jewellery through my mum, a stylish lady and real lover of fashion. Then I studied graphic design. But it was my husband, a professional gemologist, who brought me to design jewellery and I started four years ago.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration can be provoked by various situations or moments. It can be random things, shapes or people that I meet during the day. Long walks in nature and reading are two valuable sources of inspiration. I usually read about history, philosophy, art and geometry and those subjects really get my inspiration flowing.

How is your jewellery made?

My jewellery is made of gold. In my opinion, only gold can carry all the beautiful diamonds and other gems that my husband chooses for me from world markets. Black rhodium gives it a mystical elegance and highlights the amazing colours of gemstones.

Are there any specific manufacturing/crafting techniques you use?

Unique is f.e. setting in my Eye To The Soul collection, where 3-5 princess cut diamonds or sapphires are set into a gold cube. This setting allows light to pass through the stones and contributes to the maximum utilization of light reflection.

Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your designs?

Cate Blanchett, Michelle Obama and Eva Jiřičná.

How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?

I want them to feel proud, confident, elated and extraordinarily.

What has been the highest and lowest point of your career so far?

I received a Gold Award at the prestigious A’Design Award in Milan 2017. The winning ring-pendant Amulet Eye from the Eye To The Soul collection celebrates an Egyptian myth about the Eye of Horus, a symbol representing the path to wisdom and knowledge.

If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?

It's a Gothic style engagement ring I designed. It's a black rhodium plated gold ring with the big black diamond and stylish yellow gold details. I love this model. I wear it every day as it makes me happy just to look at it.

If you hadn't become a designer, what would you be doing?

I would be a painter.

Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?

I am intensively working on making my brand globally renowned. My principal wish is to build my brand and for it to be perceived as something extraordinary, truly exclusive and of an artistic value, a synonym for quality and finest design.

Are there any other designers whose work you particularly admire?

I admire Zaha Hadid and Eva Jiřičná. They managed to break into the world of men and to become leaders in the world of architecture & design. They managed and implemented their ideas at a high level and they devoted their lives to creation & design.
