Alessandro Michele is no stranger to shaking up tradition, and so the opening of Gucci’s first high jewellery boutique last month showed yet another act of innovation championed by the creative director. Among the backdrop of Rococo interiors in the renowned Place Vendome, Gucci’s first ever high jewellery collection, named Hortus Deliciarum - Garden of Delights - sits beckoning admiration.
The boutique opened its doors last month during Paris couture week and showcases over 200 one-of-a-kind pieces, typical to Michele’s eccentric and striking aesthetic. From kaleidoscopic floral designs to ferral and fantastic beastly creations, the collection nods back to Victorian ornamentalism whilst retaining a contemporary edge.
Ethereal, poetic and electric, Hortus Deliciarum feels as if plucked from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Florence Welch, the ambassador for Gucci jewellery, helped launch the collection in an exclusive Gucci gala at Le Petit Palais. Wearing a bespoke yellow gold ring adorned with yellow sapphires, the music icon made the perfect muse for such an elegant collection. The pieces from Hortus Deliciarum visibly echo Michele’s sources of inspiration in a marriage between the animal kingdom and mythical surrealism. My standout of the collection has to be the serpent ring featuring diamond eyes. From the pastel colours to the yellow gold sheen, with this ring on your finger it’d be almost impossible to avoid temptation.
From a retail perspective, Gucci’s plight into the high jewellery industry illuminates a wider trend within the fashion industry. Over the past few years, esteemed fashion houses such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton have made similar moves, tapping into the $350 billion dollar industry that is the global jewellery market. However it takes a leading creative to launch a debut jewellery collection in one of the world’s most admired locations for jewellery - one would call that a signature Alessandro Michele.
