Designer and silversmith, Limor Gefen noticed her passion for being creative and making jewellery at an early age. Arriving in Kenya in 1992 is when she truly unleashed her jewellery making skills and created her brand, GEFEN JEWELRY.
Limor creates beautiful, vibrant designs using gold, silver and gemstones that she and expert artisans make together in her workshop. Inspired by the wilderness of Africa, bead jewellery and traditional African fashion, her jewellery collections are full of colour and striking shapes, reminiscent of the freedom and uniqueness of Africa.
How did your brand begin?
My brand began when I arrived in Kenya in 1992. I was inspired by the multicolored African dress and bead jewelry. I had been a professional silversmith for four years beforehand, but the freedom and wilderness of Africa released my creative passion. That's when my brand began.
When did you first fall in love with jewellery and knew you wanted to become a designer?
At around age 9, my mother noticed how much I enjoyed arts and crafts, so she bought me a variety of materials. I started to sit on my own and create dolls from felt embroidery, fabric jewellery, etc.
How is your jewellery made?
I make my jewellery personally in my studio. I create the models from metals or wax and I’m sometimes assisted by experts who cast the metal (either gold or silver) and embed the gemstones, according to my designs.
Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your designs?
I would love to see Gal Gadot wearing my designs. As a child I always fantasized about being Wonder Woman, fixing the world and making it a better place.
Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?
I've always dreamed of opening a boutique cafe, baking my cookies (with the amazing aroma of both) and spreading love in this way. In the cafe there will be a gallery with my designs and those of "guest artists", with world music playing in the background.
What music do you play in the studio whilst you’re working?
The music I play when I work includes Fado from Portugal, which is shooting yet arouses in me an enchanted world which drives me to create my designs. I enjoy Celtic music, which evokes images of fairies and mysterious forests and green hillsides.
